(21 Jan 2018) A Syrian civilian told his daughter in a phone conversation early on Sunday that he could see Turkish jets pounding the Kurdish-run enclave of Afrin in northern Syria, where he says he currently lives.
Ramzi Hamidi said the air assault was in preparation "for the (Turkish) army to invade" the area.
Their conversation took place hours before reports emerged that Turkish troops had entered the Kurdish enclave and were advancing with Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces.
Hamidi stressed that the attacks "hit civilian areas, and there are civilian martyrs" and added that the roads in the area had been closed since Friday.
His daughter, Hevine Hamidi, left Afrin after she got married and was speaking to him from Aleppo.
Afrin is controlled by a Syrian Kurdish militia that Turkey views as part of the Kurdish insurgency in its southeast.
The militia forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the main U.S. ally against the Islamic State group in Syria.
