On a late summer's day with clear blue skies, I solo hiked to a viewpoint above Coburger Hütte with incredible views of the Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze (in Austria) and the Zugspitze (the highest mountain of Germany).
The hike starts near the Austrian town of Ehrwald at the car park of the "Ehrwalder Almbahn". Most people start by taking the cable car further up the valley from where it's an easy 1.5 hour walk to Seebensee and another half hour up to Coburger Hütte. I didn't take the cable car and chose to hike up to the lake by way of the via ferrata "Hoher Gang".
After enjoying the scenery at the mountain lake and having a very late lunch at the hut, I continued the hike with a specific viewpoint in mind. While initially following the steep trail towards the Vorderer Drachenkopf, I soon left the main path and continued right up the rocky hills between Drachenkopf and Sonnenspitze.
Reaching the viewpoint I looked back at an awe-inspiring scene: the Zugspitze in the distance and the impressive Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze dominating the foreground.
As the sun began to set behind the mountains, the famous Alpenglühen (alpenglow) made the scene even more magical.
After enjoying the view for quite some time, I walked back down to the hut and the lake before it got too dark and then - using my phone's flashlight - hiked back down to the car park via the easier but longer main trail.
