Several Russian LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) activists were arrested by police at a Gay Pride demonstration in St. Petersburg on Sunday.
The activists carrying rainbow flags and banners were protesting the detention of gay rights activist Yuri Gavrikov.
Gavrikov had planned a one-man picket in support of gays in Russia and against the city authorities decision not to allow the pride parade, but was detained by police while leaving his house on Sunday morning.
Some activists who made it to Dvortsovaya square to show their support had their banners taken away by angry paratroopers while others were led away into waiting police vans by Russian paratroopers.
