13. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Josep Guitart, farmer and member of Catalonia’s Farmers Union:
“Sure, we are currently living in the context of climate change. It’s worldwide, but particularly affecting the Mediterranean area. But we have historical records of ranches such as this one - because there is a lot of recorded history here in Catalonia - saying there have been prolonged droughts in the past here. My father is 85 years old, and he says he’s never seen anything like this, such a long drought. This is a cycle, and this time around is affecting us.”

“We had some rain this morning, and they forecast more tomorrow. If it rains a bit more, we may have some forage for the cattle. And this will result in a not so catastrophic year. But if the drought keeps on this way, we could be forced to sacrifice some animals. If we don’t see an improvement in the coming months, we will have to sacrifice animals.”

“I see things are very complicated. Because climate change is on the increase. People must act and the same goes for governments, they must do more, try to find alternatives. We need more cooperation, both from those who understand what’s going on and those who don’t. Because there are places (elsewhere in Spain) where there is a lot of water. But they don’t want to share it with those of us in need.”
