One of the most distinctive desert landscapes in the United States are the Trona Pinnacles. With a number of unique shapes ranging from "tombstones" to "ridges" and "cones", these calcium carbonate formations reach for the sky from the desert floor. What the pinnacles are, exactly, are "tufas" - structures that were formed thousands of years ago during the Pleistocene era when the area was under six hundred feet of water. Whether one wants to camp, off-road, or hike, the pinnacles today provide a mecca for adventurers in a remote area of California. If one wants to visit, one needs to be prepared for remote, and for much of the year, hot conditions as the ancient lakes have long since evaporated, and only the salt pan of the Searles Valley remains. If you can time it right, the pinnacles are also photogenic at sunrise and sunset as shown in the video.
