The creation of the State of Israel in 1948 was a glorious moment in the history of the Jewish people; however, for the Palestinian inhabitants of the land, the development was a catastrophe. After several regional wars and decades of conflict, the two State solution espoused by the international community remains a distant dream. Since Israel's occupation in 1967 of Gaza and the West Bank, expanding Jewish settlements in the latter have further reduced the land available for a Palestinian State and exacerbated tensions. Today, as the world watches the wave of violence and destruction following the horrific Hamas attack of October 7, an informed panel discusses the complicated history of the conflict, the present developments and their likely impact on the region.
Antony Loewenstein is an independent journalist who has written for The New York Times, The Guardian and The New York Review of Books. He is the filmmaker of Disaster Capitalism and author of The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports The Technology Of Occupation Around The World and Disaster Capitalism: Making A Killing Out Of Catastrophe.
Navtej Sarna is the author of the recently published novel, Crimson Spring, which has won the KLF award for the Best Fiction Book of 2022 and has now been longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award. His earlier books include The Exile and We Weren’t Lovers Like That; a short story collection, Winter Evenings; works of non-fiction, Second Thoughts, The Book of Nanak and Indians at Herod’s Gate; and the translations, Savage Harvest and Zafarnama. A professional diplomat for nearly four decades, Sarna was India’s Ambassador to the United States, High Commissioner to the UK and Ambassador to Israel.
Charles Glass is the author of Soldiers Don't Go Mad: A Story of Brotherhood, Poetry and Mental Illness During the First World War; Deserters; Americans in Paris; Tribes with Flags; and The Northern Front: An Iraq War Diary; and Syria Burning; among other books. He was ABC News Chief Middle East correspondent from 1983 to 1993.
Kai Bird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and journalist. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2006 for American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (co-authored with Martin J. Sherwin). American Prometheus is the basis for Christopher Nolan’s recent film, Oppenheimer. Bird is the Executive Director and Distinguished Lecturer of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. His book, The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames, was a New York Times best-seller and his most recent work is The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter. His memoir is called Crossing Mandelbaum Gate: Coming of Age Between the Arabs and Israelis and he also authored multiple biographies. His work includes critical writings on the Vietnam War, Hiroshima, Nuclear weapons, the Cold War, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the CIA. He won the National Books Critics Circle Award, the Duff Cooper Prize for History and is an elected member of the prestigious Society of American Historians.
Suhasini Haidar is the Diplomatic Editor of The Hindu newspaper. She covers international developments and India's ties with the world, contributes columns to The Hindu and has authored chapters in several books about South Asia, Indian diplomacy and other foreign policy issues.
