Lots of us look to confidence to help improve our success and quality of life. It can feel uncomfortable to take certain steps, so we reason that if we were more confident we would feel good and then we would do those things we need to do.
The thing is, confidence only comes from experience. And we only get experience by acting. Thus, waiting for confidence is a trap that we can spend a lot of our lives in.
Feeling good about acting is not a trap though. No one can simply will their way though not wanting to do something day in day out forever without certain consequences. The question remains, "how can we feel good enough to act?" Consider feeling good like water behind a dam and action to be like water flowing over the dam. It does not matter which source from which the good feeling comes, as long as it raises the water level so it can flow over the dam.
The answer I have learned for escaping the confidence trap is courage. Here courage is taking a greater interest in someone or something other than yourself.
