The 2017 SAGE-CASBS Award lecture
William Julius Wilson, "Reflections on American Race Relations in the Age of Donald Trump"
Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University
Thursday, June 8, 2017
As the age of Donald Trump commences, this lecture revisited the fundamental sociological proposition that racial/ethnic antagonisms are products of situations — economic, political, and social situations. In the process, Professor Wilson examined the growing association between income inequality and income segregation, elucidated how this relationship is exacerbated by racial segregation, and then considered the impact of exclusionary populist messages, as opposed to those that are inclusive. Wilson concluded by returning to his book The Bridge Over the Racial Divide: Rising Inequality and Coalition Politics (1999) to consider the theoretical basis for future inter-group cooperation.
SAGE Publishing and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University are pleased to announce that William Julius Wilson is the 2017 recipient of the SAGE-CASBS Award.
Established in 2013, the SAGE-CASBS Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the behavioral and social sciences that advance our understanding of pressing social issues. It underscores the role of the social and behavioral sciences in enriching and enhancing public policy and good governance.
