This video captures solar activity from August 12 to December 22, 2022, as recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Operating in high-definition (HD) from Earth's orbit for almost 13 years, SDO's data has revealed insights about the Sun's behavior and its effects on our solar system.
SDO uses three instruments to capture the Sun every 0.75 seconds. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) takes images every 12 seconds in 10 wavelengths. This time-lapse focuses on 17.1 nanometer imagery, showing the Sun's corona. The video condenses 133 days into 59 minutes, displaying the Sun's rotation, active regions, and magnetic loops containing superheated plasma.
Occasional interruptions occur when Earth or the Moon blocks SDO's view, and technical issues also arise. Despite this, SDO sends 1.4 terabytes of data daily. Some images are off-center due to instrument calibration.
SDO's diligent watch, alongside other NASA missions, will continue decoding the Sun's mysteries, offering cosmic insights and ensuring astronaut safety.
