This is one of our favourite Zen Walks. In today’s walking video, we explore country fields in the Alentejo region of Portugal, close to the town of Castelo de Vide. This morning walk captures a myriad of the elements which make this region so special: grassy fields with rocky outcrops, native flora such as the Portuguese cork oak, and ancient rock walls crisscrossing the landscape, which date to medieval times. In this contemplative and truly Zen walk, we pause and admire various views of spectacular rock formations and distant planes, whilst taking in a sense of silence and peace, punctuated by birdsong and the odd distant sheep bell. A special highlight is wondering upon a cluster of High Medieval anthropomorphic graves, carved deep into the granite.
Archeologists believe such grave sites date to around the 8th and 9th centuries AD. We hope you’ll feel a sense of awe and reverence while contemplating these ancient sites, overlooked by the mountain and castle of Marvão in the distance. Our walk continues through the fields, and ends with uninterrupted vistas across the valley.
