Arctic tourist vessel MS ISBJØRN 2 was refloated in Borebukta, Spitsbergen, in the evening of May 22, according to a press release by the Governor of Svalbard. She is now being towed by KV SVALBARD into Longyearbyen. The Governor has launched an investigation.
It was on Monday evening that MS ISBJØRN 2, with 11 French passengers and a crew of four, ran aground in Borebukta in Isfjorden. None of those on board were physically injured, and they were evacuated by the Governor's rescue helicopters.
The boat had a strong list, and there were fears of a major oil leak. Both the Governor's service vessel POLARSYSSEL and KV SVALBARD were sent to the scene of the accident. During the night, MS ISBJØRN 2 was refloated, and there are currently no indications of any particular damage to the ship. There have also been no large emissions from the boat. It is now being towed to Longyearbyen by KV Svalbard, where inspectors from the Norwegian Maritime Directorate will start their investigations as soon as the boat is in port.
