Internet access has been important for years. But when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, it became vital. As the country went into lockdown, kids went to school, parents went to work, and seniors saw their friends and family online.
In December, 2020, a $900 billion relief package included $3.2 billion for broadband access for people who might otherwise not afford it. Funds from the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program can be used to pay your internet bill or improve your service for faster speeds. If you’re eligible, you can get up to a $50 a month discount on your broadband internet service and associated equipment rentals, such as modems. And if your household is on Tribal lands, you could qualify for up to $75 a month. Plus, all people eligible can get a one-time discount of up to $100 for an inexpensive laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. You have to put in between $10 and $50 of your own money, but then the equipment is yours to keep.
