Life in the barracks is one of the biggest changes new recruits to the military have to adapt to and it can really suck.
All enlisted service members are required to live at barracks during basic and their initial job training and life in barracks can be unpleasant for a number of reasons: most service members share a bedroom, and nearly all share a bathroom– with the exception of some in the Air Force. Additionally, while in barracks, service members work long days, receive only base pay, and must adhere to stringent standards, including weekly room checks for tidiness and unauthorized materials by their training command.
Barracks life has also developed a reputation for craziness: with communal living in a small space, most service members have at least one horror story to tell. While upsides such as free food, camaraderie, and plentiful activities improve barracks life, it is still one of the biggest changes for those new to the military.
