The lead single to ELO’s final outing, this track is the only one of Balance Of Power’s offerings to enjoy enduring success - it is often the only track of this album featured on greatest hits compilations, and rarely will reach audiences live or on the radio. The track’s double meaning is clear - the isolation of long distance. America withholds the lost loves that Lynne held dear, and uses lyrics to discuss his estrangement from his wife Sandi and ELO’s fading success in the United States. Catchy, clever, and ever-creative, Calling America managed to secure notable chart positions, reaching #28 in the UK and #18 in the US.
