Intensive care medicine or critical care medicine is a part of medicine which involves the diagnosis and management of patients who are having life threatening conditions, who may require sophisticated requirements for life support and also for monitoring purposes. ICU is part of the hospital that cares for patients in life threatening situations. An ICU differs from the other hospital wards in that the ICU has both manpower and equipment that is needed for both round the clock care that is needed for such life threatening situations. There are fewer beds in the ICU and more manpower to cater for these needs. Moreover the visitors which are allowed to meet the patients are restricted.
