Despicable Me 4 could have been much better. Despicable Me 4 missed a trick by spreading itself too thin with multiple plotlines. While it had a strong central storyline involving Gru and the new character Poppy, the movie veered off course. After Gru antagonizes the new villain Maxime, his family goes into hiding, triggering a slew of minor arcs that dilute the emotional impact. Poppy, played by Joey King, shines as the precocious neighbor who blackmails Gru into helping her become a supervillain. This dynamic, echoing Gru's past, could have anchored the entire film. It's a nod to Gru's journey in Minions: The Rise of Gru, where he mentors like those who mentored him. This subplot emphasizes the franchise's theme of finding meaningful connections amid chaos, contrasting with Gru's paternal bond with his adopted daughters. In hindsight, focusing more on Poppy and Gru's evolving relationship would have given Despicable Me 4 the cohesion it needed.
