If you were exposed to burn pits, the VA's presumptive conditions for toxic exposure may apply to you.
Burn pits were giant open areas where the U.S. military burned waste. Paint, plastic, metal, leftover food, medical waste, human waste, almost empty chemical containers, and more were burned in these open-air dumps. If you didn’t get it on you when you were on burn-pit duty burning a barrel of garbage, you inhaled it as the smoke and chemicals fell out of the sky.
The medical conditions are common enough that the VA has ruled that several conditions are presumptive to burn pit exposure. This means that if you served at certain times in certain places and you have these health conditions, the VA presumes burn pits caused it. You don’t need a medical nexus with these presumptive conditions. Prove that you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and that you have the specific conditions, and the VA will grant you service connection.
If you were denied VA disability before, note that on August 5th, 2021, the VA added three new respiratory conditions to their burn pit presumptions list: asthma, sinusitis, and rhinitis. In 2022, additional respiratory cancers and other serious health conditions became presumptive to burn pit exposure.
