I've been making short films for the past 4 years, and throughout this time, I've gradually made bigger, and better films. This has tought me a lot, and I'm always happy to share the things I've learned onwards to people, who may want to begin making films of their own, but don't know where to start. I hope you'll find this video useful in some way :)

Tips:

1. It all starts with an idea, and a vision. Never limit your idea(s).
2. 40% pre-production, 30% production and 30% post-production. Divide your time.
3. Pre-plan. Plan everything before shooting. Make a synopsis of your script (a pitch), a production plan, a storyboard, and physically check up on your locations. Visit the places you’d like to film beforehand, and take pictures, to help visualize your idea.
4. Get permission! Always get permission to film the places you want to film. Otherwise you could very well be sued.
5. Divide the roles, amongst the production crew. It’s important to title who does what. Who’s the director, cameraman, sound-guy and so on. This will help A LOT once you get to set. It limits the arguing, and helps to make the actors feel like they’re in a positive and professional environment.
6. Acquire actors. Once everything’s been scheduled out, then it’s time to get some actors. There are several ways to do this. My best advice is to use a site like Facebook. There are tons of “actors looking for work” pages on Facebook. We got all our actors from a Facebook group for “The Final Choice”.
7. TEAM-WORK, and patience are the two most important things when it comes to production. Work together, and always be calm. If this isn’t applied, the production will fail.
8. Do the same takes many times. This should go without saying, however I feel like it’s important to mention this, because once you get to the editing room, you might find that there’s a lot of takes, you can’t use.
9. Little-to-no improvisation. It’s great to have motivated actors, that want to improvise, but don’t let them! Follow the script tightly, or else you might end up losing context when editing.
10. Always have final edit. And get second opinions on your work, before you throw it out into the world. Take criticism. Listen to what people think, and improve accordingly.
