Hong Kong online news site Citizen News has revealed it will cease operations on January 4, 2022, to “ensure everyone is safe in this time of crisis”. Founder Chris Yeung Kin-hing said the decision was made amid an increasingly tough media environment. The abrupt announcement followed the arrest of seven senior staff members at Stand News, another independent Hong Kong news outlet, over charges that it allegedly published seditious content and stirred up hatred against the government.
