Dog on the Tuckerbox, 5 mile from Gundagai (NSW)
By the way, the dog is not crying. I believe a bird may have left his calling card under his left eye ;-)
The story: Following a run of bad luck and then wrecking his wagon, Bill the Bullocky turned around to find his dog sitting on his tuckerbox (on the road to Gundagai in the 1850s). His fellow bullockies found it so funny, one of them wrote a poem, Bill the Bullocky. (I am unsure about whether it is 5 or 9 miles as stories vary)
In any case, it’s iconic Australian folklore with a very strong familiarity from my childhood. We brought our wee sons here in 1997 and so had to revisit and get photos with this lovely dog again. But this time with our travel pets, Jabinda Joey, our Tambo Teddy and Magnus, our RFDS teddy.
