The human ego is a complex mechanism that operates by upholding its beliefs about itself, in both a physical and a mental sense. Our ego has natural defense mechanisms it may perform when it feels overwhelmed or threatened. This is the ego's way of maintaining homeostasis by reducing stress and anxiety. However, often times doing these ego defense mechanisms can become debilitating, and cause more harm than good. This is why it is important to understand ego defense mechanisms so you can recognize them in both yourself and others, which will hopefully lead you to acting in a healthier manner in the future.
