A sombre silence fell across Canadian university campuses on Wednesday as the institutions honoured the 176 lives lost in a plane crash in Iran last week.
Members of the Carleton University community in Ottawa gathered to pay tribute to Fareed Arasteh, a PhD student in biology, and biology alumnus Mansour Pourjam, both of whom were on Ukraine International Airlines flight 752.
Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna spoke about the loss for all Canadian schools that were impacted, saying that “all Canadians” stand with the Iranian-Canadian community during this time.
Pourjam’s 13-year-old son, Ryan, gave an emotional speech about his father, saying that he “touched every single person in the audience.” Ryan also added that if his father were still alive, he would tell him “that it’s going to be okay.”
