Archery in Japan is an ancient tradition that was practiced by the Samurai warriors during the feudal times. In the present, it is still performed in different ways; as a martial art in disciplines like Kyudo and Equestrian Archery (Kyuba-Jutsu) and within special ceremonies around the year in Shinto Shrines.
On January 16, in the north side of Kyoto, in the Kamigamo Shrine, a ceremony called Musha Jinji (Mu means warrior/samurai and sha means shoot) is hold to sweep away the evil or the bad spirits and bring good fortune in the New Year.
The event was conducted by the Ogasawara-Ryu, and ancient Archery school with more than 800 years of history. This school was established in the year 1187 and in the present still continues to teach and preserve the art of archery at it was practiced in ancient times.
