We go on a three day exploring expedition over two weekends to two different locations. On the first two days we hike up Mount Te Aroha deep into the mountains following the pathway of the old rail tramway, We climb one of the most steep tram inclines in New Zealand The Piako Country tramway
The Piako County Tramway was built in 1882-83, just south of Te Aroha. It was a 2 mi 22 ch (3.7 km) long,[1] horse powered tramway.[2] It carried quartz from gold mines in the Kaimai Range to water-powered batteries in the Waiorongomai Stream valley below.[1]
It was built to the rare 2 ft 9 in (838 mm) gauge, thought to be that used on bush tramways in the Waitawheta and neighbouring valleys.[3]
A & G Price's first locomotive was built for the line, but proved too large for the curves and was sold for less than half its cost in 1885.[4] It was later used for log haulage on Smyth Bros tramway at Kennedy's Bay.[5]
The line included 3 self acting inclines, the longest being 400 m (1,300 ft) up a 1 in 4 gradient.
Repairs ceased in 1924 and by 1932 the line was overgrown and unusable.[1]
During the 1950s and 1960s, some rails were sold to local contractors, but in 1966 permission to remove rails was refused and in 1976, council scheduled the tramway as of historical and scientific interest.[1] The tramway was listed as Category 1 in 1997.[3]
DOC has restored parts of the tramway, now used by Waiorongomai Valley tramping tracks.[6]

while up in the mountains we find scattered around through the hills Quatz Crystal's that had dropped out along the tramways, We also discover many disused old underground mines,
The following weekend we go deep into the mountains Near Coromandal and discover some old underground Crystal mines, Full of old relics such as and tramway carts and mining tools, The first mine we enter was the Gladstone mine where we discovered and solid intact tramway axle with a four spoke wheel, it has multiple side tunnels and sections that we look down, but we left the flooded sections as they had large drops that stops me in my tracks, as I took my dog companion, but I go in deep enough to give the viewer's a great viewing experience, The second mine is the Beehive mine which has a very steep vertical entrance and is very hidden deep within bush, Once we enter the mine via the steep entrance we find a complete tram on tramway tracks still with some Crystal's and pepples inside its tipper bucket, I enter towards the east end which was deeply flooded with water, so I head down another tunnel which is so very steep that my concern level is raised that I may not be able to get back up, Once I reach the bottom to another level I find a T junction that's goes very far, but again it's flooded so I climbed back up as I was yet again concerned that I would not be able to get back up wet as I may not get traction. I managed to climb back up with abit of a hiss and roar followed by a few grunting sounds, After that we headed back down the mountain towards our car and end our exploration expedition and end the video and head home, Thank you so much for reading the descriptions this far, I hope you have a wonderful day or night 🙂
