An apartment building in rebel-controlled Donetsk, the fifth largest city in Ukraine, was hit by a reported Ukrainian missile strike early on Wednesday morning.
Several top floors were destroyed in the attack, and emergency workers and rescue dogs searched for survivors underneath the debris.
"I was just sitting on the couch and the window glass popped, the frames came off, I didn't even understand what happened," said local resident Anna Gorda. "The flat was full of smoke, I was getting choked by this gas."
Two people were reported dead and four injured.
Russia says it is trying to expand its control of the eastern region, which Ukrainian forces have bombarded in the past.
