Remember that time when Google decided to flip the script and tweet out an actual photo of the back of the upcoming Pixel 4 phone? Well today Google decided to double down on that tactic and release a 22 second commercial showing the actual phone and unveiling two of it’s big features.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the commercial, here it is.

Folks, it’s only JULY. This phone isn’t supposed to be announced for another 3 months. And I love how Google is just totally flipping the script and hyping this phone up. It’s super smart because it’s stealing a lot of hype from upcoming phones such as the iPhone 11 and Samsung’s Note 10 announcement next week.

So let’s breakdown what Google unveiled in this commercial along with an official blog post that came with it.

In this post they gave an actual photo of the front top half of the phone. This confirms that the phone will indeed not have a notch but rather go back to the older bezel look, but this time packed with way more technology.

You can see here in this photo that they are also going back to the single front-facing camera but are packing in a bunch of new stuff for, that’s right, facial recognition.

So that is big confirmation #1. Similar to Face ID on the iPhone, the Pixel 4 will allow you to unlock your phone with your face. In typical Google fashion they took a swipe at Apple with the line “face unlock works in almost any orientation - even if you’re holding it upside down - and you can use it for secure payments and app authentication too”.

Currently on the iPhone Face ID only works when the phone is right-side up, but that’s going to fixed this year since they already fixed it on the iPad Pro.

The other big real is what Google is calling “motion sense”. They’ll be pulling technology from Project Soli that uses a radar to detect tiny hand or finger motions around the device.

This technology will allow you to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls just by waving your hand. Google says “These capabilities are just the start, and just as Pixels get better over time, Motion Sense will evolve as well” So we can expect to see more features in upcoming updates.

So some pretty interesting stuff from Google. As a Pixel 3 XL user myself, I’m really hoping the Pixel 4 can wow me this October, but we’ll see.
