We've got our hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which may cause skepticism, due to the notorious battery problems the previous model had. Samsung has assured us that the Note 8 is 100% safe, so we're giving them another shot with their newest iteration of the Galaxy Note.
The Note 8's body has a very similar design to the Samsung Galaxy S8+, though a little boxier, still carries the Infinity Display, and a bigger screen, coming in at 6.8", compared to the S8+'s 6.2" screen. On the back of the Note 8, you'll find dual cameras, and a fingerprint scanner, which is really awkward to reach on such a big phone. We found ourselves using the facial recognition software much more, instead of the fingerprint scanner, to unlock the Note 8.
On the inside of the Note 8, you'll find a Qualcomm 835 processor and 6GB of RAM, which allows you to bounce between apps quickly and without any lag.
Like Apple's new Portrait Mode on their iPhone 7 Plus, the Note 8 has a Live Focus mode, that places a blur around your subject, to make it appear sharper. With dual cameras, you can also have the phone take two photos at once, one with Live Focus, and the other in wide angle.
Another key feature of the Note 8, is the S Pen, which gives a ton of extra functionality, that you won't find in other smartphones. A new feature with the Note 8 is Live Message, which allows you to make custom messages in the forms of GIFs, but we think this feature is a little more gimmicky than a useful feature. You can also use the S Pen to translate words, and the Note is still solid for drawing and doodling.
With App Pair, you can open multiple apps at the same time, which allows a lot of functionality on how you open apps. Bixby is back, and is now fully voice automated.
So overall, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a solid phone, but at the end of the day, it comes down to price, and at a whopping $930 price point, it's hard to justify this purchase when the Samsung Galaxy S8 is practically the same phone. But, users may be swayed to the Note 8, with its S Pen, dual cameras, and bigger screen.
