How to set up photo formats is a little techie but back when iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra was upgraded Apple introduced two new industry-standard media formats:
Formats – HEIF and HEVC What does this mean?
HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) for photos
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, for videos
HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and iCloud Photos while maintaining the same visual quality. This is just a personal choice but if you have 16GB and need more space and your iPhone has the option HEIF and HEVC may be a wise choice. The disadvantage is that some computers have to convert the files as they are not recognised.
