"We hope that we can back the things that we started in Heiligendamm (during the G8 summit in 2007), meaning we say, we need a worldwide agreement, treaty under the United Nations. "All options are on the table and my first choice is to solve this diplomatically and the best way to solve it diplomatically is to work with our partners and that's exactly what we're doing. And the message to the Iranian government is very clear that there is a better way forward than isolation and that is for you to verifiably suspend your enrichment programme and the choice is theirs to make."

8. SOUNDBITE: (German) Angela Merkel, German Chancellor:
"(Iran could have a much more successful economic development) if Iran would listen to reason in that issue. The reports of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) also say, that the arrangements are not held. In this respect, the doors are still open for Iran, but Iran has also to know, that we will react with new sanctions, if that is not the case."

"I happen to think it would be disastrous for the world economy and disastrous for poor nations if we didn't trade freely and fairly. One way to make that commitment is to make the Doha round succeed. I assured the Chancellor that we're committed to the Doha round, we'll work hard to achieve it."

STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that his first choice is to solve a nuclear standoff with Iran by using diplomacy, but "all options are on the table."
Bush warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a danger to world peace, and he rallied European allies to back sanctions.
Speaking during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel he said, "My first choice is to solve this diplomatically."
The US president is pushing Iran to halt its uranium enrichment in a verifiable way.
Iran insists it is enriching only for peaceful purposes.
Bush is eager to resolve the nuclear standoff with Tehran before his presidency ends.
Merkel said if Iran does not agree to suspend its enrichment programme, additional sanctions would be needed.
"The doors are still open for Iran, but Iran has also to know, that we will react with new sanctions, if that is not the case," she said.
Europeans want to wait on stiffer sanctions until after the European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, visits Tehran to present a package of incentives in exchange for stopping its enrichment programme.
and "actually nice."
