BMW has unveiled a new generation of purely electric vehicles that are sure to excite. The i4 eDrive40 offers 335 hp with rear-wheel drive, an estimated range of up to 300 miles, and an MSRP of $55,400 plus destination. For those looking for additional power, the i4 M50 is equipped with 536 hp and all-wheel drive, an estimated range of 245 miles, and an MSRP of $65,900 plus destination. Both models are expected to be available in the U.S. market in Q1 2022.
The BMW i4 M50 features an electric all-wheel drive system, with an electric motor at each end. This allows for better traction in all road conditions and improved driving stability and handling. The BMW-developed near-actuator wheel slip limitation optimizes traction and directional stability by adjusting the drive torque without intervention from traction control.
Rear-wheel drive is normally used to increase efficiency and range, but when needed, power can be relayed to the front wheels for added stability. The front motor also provides support during times of higher lateral acceleration or wheel slippage.
Both rear-wheel-drive BMW i4 eDrive40 and all-wheel-drive BMW i4 M50 models feature this near-actuator wheel slip limitation system. The Launch Control function allows drivers to benefit from optimum traction with the accelerator pressed to the floor. With torque oscillations indicating readiness, the full combined output will be instantly available upon launch.
