I lived in Tulum from November 2021 to March 2022 working remotely as were many other digital nomads from the US and around the world. Because Mexico was early to open its doors to pandemic-era travel, places in the Mayan Riviera saw a flood of tourism from people like me looking to live and work from the beach in a lockdown-free environment. But the small, beachside enclave of Tulum lacks the infrastructure to support the tidal wave of visitors. It's a place that's becoming rapidly overdeveloped and oversold. And what was once a hippie community with a boho vibe is turning into another resort destination, much like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen before it. I interview my friend and filmmaker Meni Castro, who lived in Tulum in 2017 and came back in 2021 about the changes taking place here, for better or worse.
