STORYLINE:
A group called Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) on Tuesday called for "tangible action" from the Vatican on weeding out child molesters from among its ranks, not just an apology from the Pope which will be "just words."
Pope Benedict XVI has this week been involved in three days of celebrations at the Vatican to mark the end of the "Year of the Priest".
There has been some speculation that the Pope will use this moment as an opportunity to make a general apology, or "mea culpa," on behalf of the whole Catholic Church for worldwide sexual abuse of children by priests and cover-ups by bishops.
But SNAP said an apology would not be enough to satisfy the victims of sexual abuse by priests.
Speaking at a SNAP news conference in Rome, Peter Isley, who is the group's Midwest US Regional Director, said that they were worried because some survivors were "extremely hopeful" and expected the Pope "to make a dramatic historic announcement that is going to change the future of the Catholic church forever."
They told reporters that they expected complete transparency, accountabilty and full cooperation with law enforcement agencies on priestly sexual abuse cases.
