PROSUB - Submarine Development Program (Brazilian Navy)
Brazil is not only earth. The territory also encompasses the territorial sea, in which the nation has sovereignty to develop fundamental economic activity for the country's development. is this sea area that Brazilians develop fisheries activities, foreign trade and exploitation of biological and mineral resources. The sea is the way 95% of our exports and imports and saves 85% of all oil in the country. The immense wealth of water, bed and subsoil in the territory justifies its name: Blue Amazon.
The Blue Amazon covers an area of 3.5 million square kilometers. But the country is claiming at the United Nations (UN) expansion of these boundaries to the limits of the Continental Shelf, which should raise the maritime area to about 4.5 million square kilometers - equivalent to half of Brazil's land territory.
To protect this natural heritage and ensure the Brazilian sovereignty at sea, the Navy of Brazil invests in the expansion of naval power and the development of the defense industry. essential part of this investment is the Submarine Development Program (Prosub). Born with a technology transfer agreement between Brazil and France in 2008, the program will enable the production of four conventional submarines, which will be added to the existing five submarine fleet. And will culminate in the production of the first Brazilian submarine with nuclear propulsion.
The Prosub will provide the Brazilian defense industry with cutting-edge nuclear technology - point highlighted in the National Defense Strategy. The implementation of the program strengthens also national industries of strategic importance to the economic development of the country. Prioritizing the procurement of components manufactured in Brazil for submarines, the Prosub is a strong incentive to our industrial park.
Besides the five submarines, the PROSUB establishes the construction of a complex of naval infrastructure, which includes the Shipyard and Naval Base (EBN) and Structures Manufacturing Unit Metal (UFEM) in the municipality fl uminense of Itaguai, held by Odebrecht. The inaugurations of UFEM (read the magazine) and the Main Building Construction Yard (see brochure) represent the end of the first two stages of construction of this complex and the first steps of this great achievement of national defense.
