If you're like me and realized the eclipse is almost here but you're not ready for it because you don't have filters and can't find any in the stores, here's what you can do to make your own. I will be using the emergency blanket that you can find at a walmart and a cup that fits over the lens. You can also use some balloons from Dollar Tree, a pinwheel, or the fresh flowers bags that have the mirror film on the back.
First I cut the bottom of the cup so i can see trough it while I cut it. Be carefull when you doing this because you don't want to cut your fingers or scratch the lens. SInce my cup is large enough I'll cut it again in half to make it stronger.
To test the film, look thorugh it at a clear light bulb. IF you see anything else than the filament, then you need more layers. For this test you can also use an led flashlight and you'll have to see only the the actual LED. Please note that I am not an expert and if you can still find film in your area that please use that instead of this mylar blanket. I am choosing to do this because I have seen a total eclipse before and I will be using only the LCD screen on my camera. This is about your vision and you need it...so be carefull with it.
Also if your camera has a sepatrate, direct viewfinder, cover it with the film, or just don't use it.
