Mauro Giuliani's Op.51, No.3 (Agitato) is the third classical guitar study in his collection: XVIII Leçons Progressives (18 Progressive Lessons). This series of etudes is perfect for the intermediate classical guitar level!
When I first heard this piece, I thought it was a piece by J.S. Bach. Specifically, the recurring three note melodic phrases that emerge are similar to Bach's BWV 998 Fugue.
Giuliani's Op.51, No.3 is full of intricate harmonies and phrases that build tension and relief–all while maintaining a delicate balance between the voices. Etude No.3 is in the key of A minor, 2/4 time (but frequent modulations occur throughout the piece).
Although this piece looks relatively simple on paper, it's actually relatively challenging compared to the rest of the etudes in this series. One of the biggest challenges in this piece is making sure that all the notes are held for their FULL note value! When reading through the piece quickly, it's tempting to want to release the notes quickly to make the transitions easier. However, doing so loses the push and pull effect I think Giuliani is going for.
Ultimately, Mauro Giuliani's Op.51, Etude No.3 is a challenging, beautiful, and underrated classical guitar study. The fingerings in this performance are my own, but you can find a solid edition of this piece in the Bridges - Guitar Repertoire and Studies Volume 5 ([ Ссылка ]).
