After providing sexual and reproductive health care for several years in Choloma, in the Cortés department of Honduras, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) this year launched a community-based project in the region. MSF teams of doctors, nurses, psychologists, and community educators visit vulnerable communities to offer maternal health consultations, mental health care, contraception, community education, and health promotion. Cortés department has some of the highest rates of sexual violence in the country, and teenage pregnancy is common there. MSF’s health promotion team is also holding talks and group counseling sessions with adolescents to answer their questions about sexual and reproductive health and address their mental health needs.
