Temporary #LockDown #FoodRelief for #VervetMonkeys in #Rehabilitation:
As Covid19 continues to devastate the world economy and exacerbate the problems faced by humans and rescued animals alike, we always remember the voiceless. Late last week, Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation was able to provide some much-needed food relief to around 400 - 500 vervet monkeys undergoing rehabilitation (and their human carers).
Our local community in Little Falls, Roodepoort, needs a special mention, as they rallied around and sourced food, donated fuel money and dropped off fresh fruit and veg to help in our mission.
All of our loyal supporters and donors came on board too, and made it possible for us to perform a miracle during these difficult times.
Our field vehicle and trailer were loaded with as much food as we could possibly fit.
We arrived at Bambelela Wildlife Care NPC & Vervet Monkey Rehab amid great excitement, and started off-loading inside a special cage, designed to keep most of the opportunistic little wild monkey and big baboon thieves out.
The crates and boxes of food kept on coming out of the truck and trailer, and the smiles of the worried carers got wider and wider.
Some of the food was sent to prep for feeding immediately, making it clear how urgent the need was.
Aside from loads of fresh fruit and veg, we also took 160kg of dry dog food, pasta, rice, oats and mealie meal for the carers, as well as white gold, aka one-ply toilet paper, and around 50l of the all important hand-soap and sanitizer, and loads of general purpose cleaner too. A carpet was donated for the volunteer housing, and some fake lawn will be used in the disabled section (the monkeys who can never be released).
The need is great, and all of us who care about Wildlife, need to continue doing our best to help the animals and by supporting the loving care-givers who tirelessly give their all to care for those who rely completely on them.
The sobering reality is that all of that work, and all the food we off-loaded, only provided food for 4 to 7 days' feed.
From the bottom of our Wild Hearts, we would like to thank each and every donor and supporter who makes our work possible. Thank you for your support and loyalty. We need you now more than ever.
In the meantime, have a look at the happy monkeys, and the fruits(!) of our labour!
