We have more than one kindle fire that work great. However one would not charge correctly. It just had a blinking battery icon. So Amazon sent us another one. However it is now doing the same thing. Is this part of a bad batch of these? Here's how the problem developed. Early in the day it was plugged into a laptop via a standard USB cord. I think it was for a verizon phone. But it was not really charging very fast or at all. I just decided to use it because it still had like 40% power.
After a while it warned that battery power was low and that it should be plugged into a charger. However, it was still working just fine. But I wanted to charge it. So I got out the Amazon high speed wall charger I bought and the free USB cable provided with the unit. And at this point everything was working great.
I decided to power all the way down so it could have an uninterrupted charge since it was down to about 15% battery power. Right away it booted on it's own and then a message saying that it needed to be charged kept flashing on the screen. It had an "OK" button to press, but me tapping it did nothing. Next I verified that the amazon high speed wall charger, was indeed working. If I pulled out the cord, all activity or flashing message would vanish. If I plugged it back in, this blinking warning about the battery would return. So I know it was getting juice.
I decided to close the lid and come back in an hour. At that point, there was no more messages, but just this huge blinking battery icon. I tried to reset it by holding the power button 20+ second when it was plugged in, and when it was NOT plugged in. The only thing I could get it to do was have the big battery return. I know kindle is a great product and there are millions of happy users out there. So I think I'm unlucky and got this lemon as our other kindle is still ok. Only now we are afraid to let the battery get too low.
