May 24, 1940 Iosif Brodsky was born. Russian and American poet and publicist. In 1987 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for a comprehensive authorship, imbued with clarity of thought and poetic power." Born in Leningrad, USSR. Father is a photographer, mother is a translator. During the Second World War, in early childhood, Joseph Brodsky survived the blockade of Leningrad by the Germans, where he and his parents nearly starved to death. As a young student, Joseph Brodsky was a "naughty child" known for his disobedience in class. After dropping out of school, he continued self-education. He taught different languages. Joseph Brodsky developed a deep interest in classical philosophy, religion, mythology, and English and American poetry. At 15, Joseph Brodsky began to write his own poems and make literary translations. At the age of 20, he met Anna Akhmatova. She encouraged his work and subsequently became his mentor. A few years later, Joseph Brodsky began to be persecuted for his anti-Soviet activities. At 31, after he announced that he wanted to stay in the USSR, he was expelled from the country. At 47, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
