Back in the early 90’s Guns N’ Roses were one of the biggest bands in the world thanks to the release of their double album Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 which came out in 1991, One hting that’s overlooked about this period in the band’s history were the great opening acts they had on the Use Your Illusion Tour. Some of the notable bands who opened for Guns N’ Roses included Motorhead, Blind Melon, The smashing Pumpkins, The Cult, Brain May band, The Suicidal Tendencies and yes..Nine Inch Nails. While most of the band’s may have had a good experience on the road with Guns N’ Roses, one band who didn’t was Nine Inch Nails.
Trent Reznor has told Q that supporting Guns'N'Roses were the worst shows Nine Inch Nails ever played. Speaking to Q Magazine Reznor recalled opening for Guns N’ Roses in 1991 saying
"It was only a couple of show and they were some of the worst performances we [Nine Inch Nails] ever had in front of the most hostile, moronic audiences I've ever experienced," he recalled.
"They were there to rock; what they didn't want was some looking dudes playing noisy synths and they made that very clear to us.
"Our first show was in Mannheim, Germay. There were thousands of people standing there going [raises middle finger] and there were bits of sausage on the stage. I've tried to block it out."
Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum remembered the audiences reaction to NIN in his recent book Double Talkin Jive revealing
Before they went out onstage,
they dressed completely in black and covered any visible skin in white
powder. Then they would storm out there like madmen, with their singer,
Trent Reznor, at the head. On this particular evening, we were playing the, a
huge gray concrete arena in Germany. I could tell right away that the crowd wasn’t
easily charmed; they wanted to see their band, and didn’t give a shit about
the opening act. Trent could see that too, and he went over to the front of
the stage and did a salute, which caused the audience to boo and
Trent to burst out laughing.
Nine Inch Nails producer and touring member Sean Beaven spoke to the great Guns N’ Roses Central about the tour revealing and he said the following:(10 min mark)
So how did NIN get on the bill? Well Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose was a huge fan of the band when nobody else in his circle seemed to be. Metallica drummer Lars Urich would shed some more light on this saying:
“I remember late one night Axl was sitting there and telling me about this band called Nine Inch Nails. He was saying “this is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard. And we were all sitting there going what the f are you talking about? He had nine inch nails support guns n’ roses in europe and i remember hearing how they got booed off the stage. But he was there when the rest of us were still listening to judas priest.
That gig in germany was also important because it represented the last straw for guitarist Izzy Stradlin. Halfway through guns n’ roses set frontman axl rose walked off the stage and almost incited another riot. Rose had caused a riot a few months prior in St louis rose jumped off stage and incited a riot causing almost a million dollars in damages and countless lawsuits. Stradlin would hang on for a few more shows before announcing his official departure a few months later. He would be replaced by Candy Guitarist Gilby Clarke.
In a 1993 interview that Axl Rose gave to Hit Parader magazine he would claim he wanted to collaborate with Trent Reznor and Dave Navarro on a future musical project.
In the years that followed the dissolution of Guns N’ Roses classic lineup, several members of NIN would play wit hAxl Rose in his version of Guns N’ Roses including guitarist Robin Finck and drummer Chris Vrenna in addition to producer Sean Beaven who worked on the band’s long awaited album Chinese Democracy for 2 years.
