Japanese school lunch, or kyushoku (給食) is fairly common in most elementary and junior high schools across the country. It is part of the educational system for the children where they learn to be responsible (serving food, cleaning up, and reducing food waste) and about health and nutrition (the health benefits of certain foods, portion sizes, and food groups).
From early October through to late December, I was able to capture photos of the lunch at my four schools. The photos are in chronological order and go right up until the last day of kyushoku before the winter holiday.
One of the joys of working in Japan has been eating a healthy, balanced and varied meal every workday. It’s always a surprise to see what the day’s menu will be and as long as you have an open-mind and are willing to be adventurous, you’ll find that there’s always something you’ll love to eat each and every day.
