The FBI is searching for the remains of a onvicted drug dealer from Springfield missing since 2003. It continued in Agawam Wednesday at a residential property at 160 Springfield St. A small excavator arrived at the scene in the morning on the flatbed of a truck marked K &B Construction. Later in the morning the same truck left with state police Lt. Thomas Murphy in the passenger seat and came back a short time later with another excavating bucket. The search, that began Monday evening, represents a significant development in Westerman’s unsolved vanishing. A drug dealer with ties to the so-called “Springfield Crew“ of the Genovese crime family, Westerman was taken out by rival gangsters, investigators believe, although they were never able to find his body.
His BMW was found abandoned in a McDonald’s restaurant parking lot, and his keys on the floor of a local grocery story in early November of that year – just days before crime boss Adolfo “Big Al“ Bruno was taken outin a contract hit. The two events seemed to have been linked in that they were the products of a violent uprising among second-string gangsters vying for power and fear. Admitted gangster who was involved Frankie Roche, who turned government informant in 2007, told investigators onetime mob enforcer Fotios “Freddy“ Geas paid him $10,000 to rubout Bruno at the behest of higher-ranking mobsters here and in New York. Geas was charged in both Hampden Superior and U.S. District Court in Springfield, until his case was transferred to a federal court in Manhattan and more defendants were added. Among those added to the murder indictment in that state were former acting Genovese crime boss Arthur Nigro and reputed Springfield leader Anthony J. Arillotta who disappeared from the federal prison system one day after he was arraigned on March 24. Law enforcement officials will not say whether Arillotta is cooperating with the government. His defense lawyer has been vague about his whereabouts but has said he is still incarcerated. Geas is awaiting arraignment in New York.
