The name Alfa Romeo carries huge history, incredible motorsport success and some of the most stunning cars ever made. Join me for a tour at the Museo Storico including special access to the secret storage to see cars from concepts and the rarest models made to the exceptionally valuable 33 Stradale, and even the first Formula 1 winning Alfetta.
Founded back in 1910, Alfa Romeo's history includes wins at the Targa Florio, Mille Miglia, and Formula 1 to name a few. In addition, it's also involved the creation of fabulous road cars from the old 6Cs and 8Cs, to the iconic 33 Stradale, and onwards to modern cars like the 8C Competizione and brand new GTAm.
At the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese, outside of Milano, Italy, we can see a selection of the cars on display across a number of areas from the Timeline, to Bellezza and Velocita. Initially we have a whistle stop tour throughout time before heading into a look at some of the unbelievable concepts from the past.
One of the highlight cars by far is the most expensive road Alfa Romeo in the world, the 33 Stradale and in this case the original Prototipo. Only 12 cars were built in total and they would be worth approximately $15m or so in the modern world, but an additional 6 chassis were also used to create a number of prototypes in partnership with the likes of Bertone, Italdesign and Pininfarina, 5 of which we can see during the visit.
The motorsport history includes the two cars that featured two motors, in one case installed side by side and the other front and back. A particularly timely highlight is the very car driven by Nino Farina to victory at Silverstone in the first Formula 1 race of the current time back in August 1950, an event that has been celebrated this very month with the 70th Anniversary race at the same circuit. Alongside it sits Fangio's car from 1951.
But then it's time to explore the storage archives, home to hundreds of vehicles from throughout the history; from Indycar and F1, to the 164 Procar that features the world's first V10 engine, capable of producing 620hp but sadly that never made it to racing with the series not taking off. It's here we can see the Diva concept which later became the Alfa Romeo 4C and plenty more concepts, production cars, projects and racecars.
