DaCapo Chamber Choir's "Garage Choir" session of "Until You Wake" by Leonard Enns
(original poem by Christina Rossetti; adapted by LE)
directed by Leonard Enns
Recorded by Chestnut Hall Music, October 28, 2020
Uptown Parkade, Waterloo, ON
Composer Leonard Enns (director of DaCapo) writes of this piece: "The composition is one of just over a half dozen short choral pieces I wrote in the first months of the pandemic. This one, setting a text by the Victorian poet Christina Rossetti, was written for a friend who was an early victim, and ultimately survivor, of Covid. Through a number of weeks of intubation his family and friends waited hopefully for a time when the tubes could be removed and he would wake to consciousness. During that time I came across Rossetti's poem, and added the notes that seem already to have existed somewhere. Sometimes a good text simply sings itself onto the page."

The Love which doth not sleep,
The eternal Arms surround thee:
The Shepherd of the sheep
In perfect love hath found thee.
Sleep through the holy night,
Christ-kept from snare and sorrow,
Until thou wake to light
And love and warmth to-morrow.
-- Christina Rossetti
