Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday the province is preparing to unveil a three-stage reopening plan on Thursday, and that the government would also seek to have a state of emergency in the province extended until June 2.
Ford made the announcement during a daily briefing on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Finance Minister Rod Phillips.
The premier also said his government would conduct a complete review of long-term care homes, but stopped short of committing to a public inquiry into the impact the novel coronavirus has had on the province.
“We’ll make sure we review it from top to bottom,” he said.
As of Tuesday, Ontario reported 361 new cases of COVID-19 and 56 additional deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 20,907 and the death toll to 1,725.
According to the Ministry of Long-term Care, there have been 1,239 deaths reported among residents and patients in care homes across the province.
