As a DJ, it was my job to service a wide swath of music to keep everyone moving, I was not limited to disco, danceable anthem rock and even Frank Zappa made it, along with offbeat but local favorite, Jean Luc Ponty and his "New Country". Queen's "We Will Rock You" opens with one of the most recognizable rhythm patterns ever, two foot stomps and a clap. During one of my high school pep rallies where everyone's attendance was necessary, some one started the foot stomping and the clap and the rest of us, all four years of students assembled in one place joined in to thunderous glory of "We Will Rock You". That song was on the radio constantly, and a few avant garde stations would directly segue into "We Are The Champions" , the next song on the album, "News Of The World". Arena rock was never better than this uplifting one two punch of bombast that resonated right into the heart of me. Queen had released five albums, each more complex and enjoyable than the last and became the heroes of radio rock. Where Jagger had acted slightly fey alongside his swagger, Freddie Mercury took fey to the max and buffered it with the toughness and roughness of their special brand of art rock that never seemed to contrived or false. The sheer power of "We Will Rock You" takes me back to that one assembly in 1977 when our football team needed a boost, and they really got to kickin' some ass after that. Students, teachers and priests (yes I went to a Catholic all boy high school) were all in on this one. Not disco, but from that era and when I found the Rick Rubin ruined version, tacked that version onto the studio recording and finished it up with "We Are The Champions" like it does on the record. Both songs need to be heard just this way, I hope you like the edits here.
