According to the New York Times, the hackers who were traced back to China were trying harvest the personal data of tens of thousands of U.S. federal employees with top-security clearances.
The Times article cited top U.S. officials who said a database connected to the Office of Personnel Management was targeted in the cyber attack.
The report... confirmed by Homeland Security officials... said the breach attempt happened in March... though it's unclear whether any information was stolen and whether the Chinese government was involved.
The news broke as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was in Beijing for bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart to thaw tense relations over cyber security.
Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the allegations were part of what he called an irresponsible smear campaign against China. Cheri.
