Tubal evaluation is a very important aspect when we manage any kind of couple. Tubes, these are present on either sides of the uterus. Basically we have two fallopian tubes, the left and the right. basically the egg and the sperm meet in the tube and form the embryo and these embryos come and get deposited in the uterus. Suppose if the tubes are locked or if it is diseased , this process cannot take place. So ether it can result in a tubal ectopic pregnancy or infertility. The egg and the sperm can’t meet, so they can’t form embryo. Tubal pregnancy, takes place basically if the tubes are diseased. The basic function of the tubes is to push the embryo back to the uterus. Suppose if this function is lost, the embryo gets implanted in the tube. This results in a tubal pregnancy. Tubal pregnancy is a catastrophic event. So it has to be recognized early and treated early to have the best outcome. Generally what we think is if one tube is affected by ectopic pregnancy, that means the tube is diseased to a certain extent. We assume that the other tube is diseased. It can be in the various stage of the disease. So this has to be evaluated so that the person doesn’t repeat in a repeat ectopic pregnancy. The ectopic pregnancy incidence rate is very high in couple undergoing infertility treatment. The first time ectopic pregnancy rate is 10 to 20%, the recurrence, suppose if the person has one ectopic pregnancy previously and the chances of them having a repeat ectopic pregnancy is as high as 22 to 25%. This percentage goes on increasing as they continue having a repeat ectopic in the second time as well. The third time ectopic pregnancy would be as high as 40%. So it is very essential to diagnose the tubal disease at the early stage so that we can prevent the ectopic pregnancy the next time and it gives us a way to evaluate and treat how best the person can conceive with the embryo being intrauterine the following cycle.
