"The vote that we voted for was introduced by Bibi (Benjamin) Netanyahu. It is his compromise. He cannot come at the last minute all of a sudden to say 'here is another one'. It's a serious matter and I think we behaved as we should have."

27. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr Ahmed Tibi, Israeli Arab member of Knesset:
"It was very important for us to say that we are still against most articles of this plan, but that we abstained in order to put ourselves in the opposite side to the right radical wing, to say that we are the first obstacle in the front of the radicalism in this parliament and in Israel. We assisted in evacuating settlers from Palestinian occupied territories."
28. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ra'anan Gissin, Israeli Prime Minister's spokesman:
"There's no need for a referendum. What you've seen today is the real referendum. In a parliamentary democracy the parliament - the Knesset - is the representative of the people, and today the people of Israel had their voice through the vote in the Knesset."

STORYLINE:
In an historic session, Israel's parliament approved Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza withdrawal plan, although four key Cabinet ministers immediately threatened to resign if the prime minister didn't heed calls for a national referendum on the plan.
The vote on Tuesday marked the first time parliament has authorised the removal of Jewish settlements from lands the Palestinians claim for a state.
