Well-known local fiddle player Gerry O’Connor presents a musical lecture based on his 2018 publication of The Rose in the Gap: Dance Music of Oriel from the Donnellan Collection, an edited collection of traditional instrumental music from the South East Ulster area.
The talk highlights the rich body of dance music that was in circulation in Counties Louth, Armagh, Monaghan and Cavan during the Gaelic Cultural revival at the turn of the 20th century, and describes the process of re-imagining and re-presenting this unique body of melodies now held in the archives of The National Folklore Collection at UCD. Music from the collection is also played.
